Mileage Run to Hawaii – Trip Intro
As I was browsing one of the many frequent flyer forums that I follow, I came across a mileage run deal. The deal was for flights on British Airways and American Airlines from Amsterdam (AMS) via London (LHR) and Los Angeles (LAX) to Honolulu (HNL) for a price of approximately 400 euros! After only a couple of minutes other people were reporting that weekend return trips were also possible and that got my attention…
Shortly after I was running search queries on ITA Matrix to check for possible itineraries and noticed that you could fly to Honolulu and spend less than 12 hours in Waikiki before flying the same route back again. This trip would cost me 416 Euros and according to milecalc.com it would earn me just over 34.000 award miles as American Airlines Platinum member.
Being AA Plat member I was able to pick seats in the Main Cabin on all flights so that ensured me I would have plenty of legroom on the exit row seats, which is a must being almost 2 meters tall.
At first everyone thought that this deal was an error fare, but it didn’t take long for information to appear on Flyertalk (the world’s biggest frequent flyer community) that this was actually a sale by British Airways! I hope there will be more like this, or maybe not? Depends how this first mileage run experience will go…
So on Saturday November 21st I will be flying out of AMS at 7.30am to HNL and arrive there at 8.55pm so I will miss out on the sunset. Sunday November 22nd I will fly out of HNL at 8.10am to return home and land in Amsterdam at 4.35pm.
As I’m flying with carry on luggage only I hope to be off the plane and through security quickly, I can then make my way to the train station to continue my journey towards Antwerp so I’ll be home on time to to catch up on some sleep and be back at work on Tuesday morning. Reactions of my co-workers: “You’re crazy!” Maybe I am? But when I get asked “What did you do this weekend?”, I will hopefully have a great story to tell.
As of today I will be posting daily updates about my trip, so keep an eye on my blog or get live trip report updates through social media!
