Mileage Run to Hawaii – CitizenM Hotel Schiphol
First of all sorry for the delay in this so called “live” trip report, but due to instable wifi connections I wasn’t able to upload any articles properly during my mileage run trip to Hawaii. The coming days the backlog of articles will be posted.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I booked the CitizenM hotel at Schiphol airport for several reasons. The good thing about the hotel is the fact that it’s so close to the airport, you only need to walk out the exit where the hotel shuttles are located and then it’s a 3 minute walk to the hotel. Another plus is the price, compared to other hotel brands that I sometimes stay, the price is below average.
Check in was very smooth as CitizenM uses a self check in system. There is always a staff member at the reception area to help you out in case there’s something you wouldn’t understand or if something would go wrong with the check in system. Guillaume helped me out with the entire process and at the end I even received a voucher for any kind of drink at the bar in the evening.
I chose a room on the city side of the hotel as there is more noise from the runway on the other side of the hotel and I wanted a good night of sleep due to an early start the next morning. My room (515) was located on the fifth floor, it was very compact but it had everything I needed. So what more could you ask for? The room was clean and well maintained, which I see as big factors when reviewing hotels.
The hotel wifi was free and it was superfast on any kind of device. It even worked in the elevators, hallways, reception area and right outside the hotel. Especially as a blogger you wanna stay connected at all times, that’s the case for me as I’m only just starting.
Downstairs there was a desk which held 6 computers for people to use to access the internet or print documents if needed. Next to the self service desk, there was a U shaped bar with a couple of tables and chairs next to it which served as the restaurant area. There were always people down there that night, even in the big lounge area. Now you’ll have to excuse me for not having any pictures of these areas, but I find it disturbing and annoying myself that people are walking around taking pictures of public areas such as a restaurant, lounge or bar in a hotel.
Late afternoon I started to feel a bit hungry, but instead of eating something at the restaurant downstairs, I went to the shopping area inside of Schiphol airport and got myself a sandwich and a pack of icetea.
I decided to go to bed around 11pm and watch some TV till my eyes got heavy. The bed was ok to sleep in, a bit harder than what I’m used to, but the bedding and pillows were comfy. I usually like to sleep in a very dark room, now this room had a fair bit of light even with all lights turned off. It was only at around 3am when I woke up that I found out that I could roll down an automated blind to make the room completely dark. I just left it up because it made too much noise to bring it all the way down.
My alarm went off for the first time at 4.30am… yikes! But as I didn’t sleep properly, probably due to being nervous, I snoozed it once and got out of bed at 4.45am and jumped straight into the shower which was a rain shower and a joy to wake up.
All in all this is a good hotel if you need to spend the night at the airport, the rates aren’t that expensive compared to some other big brand hotels in the area like the Sheraton, Hilton and Crowne Plaza. So do yourself a favor and don’t sleep on the floor or any uncomfy couches at the airport like I saw some people early this morning when I walked into the airport. Book yourself a night at CitizenM, you won’t regret it.
