IHG Accelerate 2016
As the New Year arrives, all counters from loyalty programmes have been reset for the elite qualifications, so it’s great to see IHG offer a new promotion to kick off 2016, enter IHG Accelerate 2016!
It doesn’t matter if you have been a member of IHG for years or if you have just registered yourself as a new member (just do it because you can earn points!), anyone who’s enrolled in the InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) loyalty programme can earn points with this promotion. Starting today January 1st until April 30th there will be plenty of opportunities for earning points.
Once you have registered yourself for the promotion, you can log into your account and on the left side of your screen, you will see the “My Offer Status” link on which you need to click. This will take you to a page that will display any of the current promotions that you have been enrolled in.
Once there, you will need to click on the “Track Your Progress” link and it will take you to the dashboard of the promo.
As you can see above I can earn a total of 55.000 points, now you might think “Oh sh*t that’s a lot of points!”, well yes and no as you need to check for yourself how much you need to invest in order to get these points. Let me explain myself, a couple of years ago you could easily earn tens of thousands of points with a single night stay, but IHG has caught up and has made it harder to earn points.
Years ago I just blindly tried to complete all my offers without even looking at the cost… “Yaay I got 50.000 points!” Yes dufus, but you spend $ 400 in order to get them, not a smart move… But we learn from our mistakes so like in 2015 I will first analyse my offers and then see what the maximum is that I can get out of the promotion with the least amount of spending.
These are my offers for the IHG Accelerate promotion for 2016:
Now the maximum I would get out of my offers would be to stay a weekend (Friday & Saturday night or Saturday & Sunday night) in January as it will get me the following points:
- 5000 points for January Bonus Offer
- 5000 points for Stay Once
- 4000 points for Weekend Stay
Now that’s 14.000 points for a weekend stay somewhere in January, not bad especially as there are opportunities to find very cheap nights (49 Euros) all over Europe, but even closer to home, all you have to do is run searches on the IHG reservation system.
Another easy 1000 points is the “Points Purchase”, the IHG points are sold at $ 13.50 per 1000 points. So for that money you get 2000 points.
I have been an IHG Ambassador (only valid for Intercontinental hotels) for a couple of years, I need to renew my membership every year. You can either do this by redeeming points or I could spend $ 200 on my renewal and it will get me:
- 5000 points from the IHG Accelerate promo
- 15.000 points for simply renewing
- 10% rebate on any points that I redeem in 2016
So that’s another 20.000 points I could earn, ok not at a low cost but if I were to redeem a total of 50.000 points for a night at let’s say the Intercontinental hotel in Bora Bora, the rooms can go for around 1000 Euros per night! You see what I’m getting at? You need to calculate your cost versus reward for your personal travel plans, you might not wanna go to Bora Bora and stay closer to home. Well then remember that IHG also has a returning promotions that are called “Point Breaks” where it’s possible to book hotel stays for 5000 points per night, so then your let’s say 50.000 points can be redeemed for a possible 10 hotel stays!
One thing you need to remember is that every promotion comes with its own terms and conditions and this is no different for this one. Not only does the promotion itself have them, but every offer of the Accelerate 2016 promotions has them too! Make sure to read them…
Oh and besides earning points for the promotion, you will also earn the regular IHG points when staying at their hotels and if you are an elite member of their loyalty programme, you’ll earn extra bonus points as well!
So will you participate in this promotion? Do you have any questions about this promotion or about IHG? Don’t hesitate to contact me and I’ll do my best to answer your questions!
